Route 6 Espresso is open till nine, and the last train leaves at eleven fifty-six. That gap is the whole reason the place stays busy after eight: nobody wants to stand on a platform for an hour, and the café is the only thing on that side of the station with the lights still on. The owner learned this by accident. She had been closing at seven for two years, and then one November she stayed open late to finish the books, and by half past eight there were eleven people inside, all of them waiting for the same train. She has kept the later hours ever since. On a good night the last forty minutes are worth more than the whole afternoon, which is not something she would have predicted, and is not something the accountant believed until he saw the second year of it.
